RDS general information

You can find RDS here: Start RDS with the browser

Remote Desktops

Start Remote Desktops with the browser

Scientific Application Server

This server provides all employees with a virtual Windows workstation. Windows users find almost exactly the same conditions as on their managed, physical computer. Only Microsoft Office and few other programs are installed. Additional programs can be subscribed to via the Appstore (https://app.ethz.ch/kiosk, use Remote Desktop, otherwise VPN is required). RDS: Getting Software

GESS Application Server

This server is a smaller version of the Scientific Application Server for very specific tasks. Use it if you have installed a particular software here. Otherwise, use the Scientific Application Server.

Remote Apps

Start Remote Apps with the browser

Some programs are provided as so-called Remote Apps. When you start one of these applications, the application window opens on your local device, but the application itself runs on the remote server with access to your home. For example, you can use your ETH-Mail account with the Outlook you are used to from your office without having to configure it on your private device (even on a Mac).

Remote App vs. Remote Desktop

Teams

Registraion

To utilize Microsoft Teams you must first register, then install the application.

All users need to obtain a personal license via IT Shop. Follow the instructions here http://u.ethz.ch/ctx11.

IMPORTANT: Persons with a dual relationship to ETH (students and employees) should obtain free student licenses for teams according to the license agreement with Microsoft. The scope of functions for teams is identical. This leads to significant cost savings for ETH.

Installing the App

  • – Managed Windows clients: Teams will be automatically installed via Baramundi – Please establish a VPN connection to allow the installation. If you are logging into a managed Windows client for the first time, you need to let us know (SmartDesk/ or gess-support@gess.ethzch) so that Teams can be properly configured.
  • – Managed Mac clients: Teams is available in «ETH Self Service»
  • – Self-managed clients and mobile clients (e.g., Smartphones): https://teams.microsoft.com/downloads

Support

Please contact us in case you need support (https://gess-support.ethz.ch).

Notices

1.We strongly advise against installing Office 365 (Word, Outlook, etc.) yet. Doing so might break your current Microsoft Office and require a full reinstallation of your computer.

2.Microsoft Teams is a cloud application. All data is stored in Microsoft data centres in Switzerland in compliance with Swiss data protection laws.

  • Information

  • Zoom general information
  • Chat

Chat Server an der ETH (ID BD) (in German)

  • ID BD provides a Matrix / Riot.im instance. Matrix is an open communication protocol for real-time communication and Synapse is the open source reference implementation. The tool enables secure real-time communication within ETH. Riot.im is particularly suitable as a web client, where the installation is hosted at (https://chat.ethz.ch).In addition to Android and iOS apps, Riot also offers desktop applications. All you have to do is to configure staffchat.ethz.ch as server name and you can start chatting.Primarily the offer is a chat solution. For video and audio we have to refer to alternative services. At the moment our Riot.im infrastructure for videoconferencing does not scale.
  • Redirect phones

  • The office telephones can be redirected to any number in the same number range. Telephones with a “National” range can be forwarded to a number in the “National” range and those in the “International” range to numbers in the “International” range. Home Office general information
